Casper de Jong  -interdisciplinary artist

“Boutjes, moertjes, stekkertjes, snoertjes”
(De Huilende Rappers)

Casper de Jong is an interdisciplinary artist and master prototyper from Utrecht who works within the fields of technology, visual art and theatre.

Through a light-hearted approach, Casper takes technology out of its original context and shows how strange our connections with technology often get. Whether it is through building robots that endlessly perform the same task, an installation that constantly tracks his own mobile screen time or a flute that whistles a tone based on its user's facial emotions, Casper’s work invites you to think about your relationality with technology by focusing on the element of play. Through play, we can open up, and feel freer to explore and interact with our surroundings in new ways. Building upon the concept of the ‘homo luden’ Casper’s works highlights the often overlooked aspects of technology that lend it to become a creative and playful tool. In executing his artistic practice Casper often realises full exhibitions in which a specific theme is dealt with. Within these exhibitions Casper often situates elements of play and wonder, in doing so Casper questions the standards we have come to associate with the gallery.

Casper’s graduation work ‘The Factory of the Future’ (2017) was nominated for the ‘Gemeente Utrecht Prijs (Utrecht municipality price, where the 5 best projects from every graduating art student were chosen) and right after designed and curated an exhibition for the Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. At the beginning of 2018 the exhibition ‘ROBOTS’ opened in de Vrijstaat, which Casper designed together with SETUP. His self-playing robotic flute (2018) was displayed in the museum Speelklok, Utrecht, from September 2018 until March 2019. In November 2018 the installation ‘SWEATSHOP’ premiered, which he made together with fashion designer Floortje Wijnands as part of the project ‘Installation48’ commissioned by Oneseconds and SETUP. In 2019 he started to work on a pottery robot based on the pottery scene in Ghost(1990) as part of the year program ‘Unchained Melodies’ by SETUP. Multiple new autonomous projects started in 2018 and 2019. Casper does occasional readings and workshops about Robots, robots and society and robots in schools, etc.
